Job Summary

The Dishwasher / Kitchen Assistant is responsible for maintaining cleanliness and orderliness in the kitchen, ensuring that dishes, utensils, and kitchen equipment are properly cleaned and sanitized. This role also involves assisting with basic food preparation tasks and supporting the kitchen staff during busy shifts.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Dishwashing and Cleaning

  • Wash and sanitize all dishes, utensils, and cooking equipment promptly and thoroughly.

  • Maintain cleanliness of dishwashing areas, including sinks, counters, and dish racks.

  • Empty and clean trash bins and ensure proper disposal of kitchen waste.

2. Kitchen Maintenance

  • Clean and sanitize kitchen surfaces, floors, and equipment according to health and safety standards.

  • Ensure all cleaning supplies and tools are stored properly and are readily available when needed.

  • Monitor and maintain cleanliness in food storage areas and walk-in refrigerators.

3. Food Preparation Support

  • Assist with basic food preparation tasks, such as washing and peeling vegetables, measuring ingredients, or portioning items.

  • Ensure that prepped items are labeled and stored appropriately.

  • Support line cooks and chefs during peak hours by restocking supplies and ingredients.

4. Equipment Maintenance

  • Regularly check dishwashing machines and other cleaning equipment for proper operation and report any issues to the Kitchen Manager or Sous Chef.

  • Perform routine maintenance on cleaning tools, such as replacing mop heads or refilling sanitizing stations.

5. Team Collaboration

  • Work closely with kitchen staff to ensure smooth operations and timely service.

  • Respond promptly to requests for clean dishes, utensils, or kitchen tools.

  • Assist in setting up or breaking down the kitchen at the beginning or end of shifts.

 

Qualifications and Skills:

Required Skills and Experience

  • Education: No formal education is required, but basic literacy and numeracy skills are preferred.

  • Experience:

    • Prior experience in a kitchen or cleaning role is an advantage but not mandatory.

  • Technical Skills:

    • Familiarity with dishwashing equipment and cleaning tools is a plus.

    • Basic knowledge of food safety and hygiene practices.

Soft Skills

  • Strong work ethic and a willingness to take on physically demanding tasks.

  • Ability to work quickly and efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
